For those who have problems with their vision, Laser Vision Correction can probably address this concern. This is one form of laser surgery which is performed on the eyes to correct one’s vision. Some of the most common eye concerns that can be treated via Laser Vision Correction or Laser Eye Correction are nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. The procedure is done by a highly trained ophthalmologist wherein laser is used in order to reshape the eye’s cornea. If you are wondering if you can become a candidate for this procedure, you must meet certain requirements. You should at least be 18 years old, no specific eye conditions such as optic nerve diseases or cataracts and you must also be a healthy individual.During the procedure, the ophthalmologist anesthetizes the eyes. The patient may also be mildly sedated. The patient’s should be in a lying down position and the eye should be right under the laser device. Throughout the entire course of the surgery, the patient’s eyelids are kept open. They eye is also pressurized in order to enable the ophthalmologist to perform the necessary incisions with much ease. The process is normally not an uncomfortable one due to the anaesthetic medicines applied to the eyes.Normally, one eye is operated at a time though both can be operated on the same day. The decision is usually made by the patient. The initial incision that is made creates a very small flap out of the cornea’s surface. This procedure is performed with the use of a precision instrument referred to as microkeratome or using a laser. This circular flap is very carefully folded to keep it out of the way. After this delicate procedure, the doctor will use the laser to take away the tiny tissues in the cornea. This procedure is called ablation. The laser is described as a concentrated beam of cool UV (ultraviolet) light which is very precise and is even capable of cutting notches in a single hair strand without even breaking it. For each pulse of the laser, 39 millionths of an inch or 99 millionths of a cm of corneal tissue are removed in 12 billionths of a second. The flap is then put back into place once the necessary corrections had already been made in order to cover the area where corneal tissue had been removed.Once the cornea had been reshaped properly, it can focus light directly to the retina without any distortion. This ideally solves the visual problems. Usually, the entire procedure for Laser Eye Correction takes only around 5 minutes. Patients should take someone who will drive them home after the surgery since healing period for the eye usually takes several days. In most cases, patients experience improvement in their vision immediately. However, there are also some who notice the improvement after a few days or weeks.
